Speaker Profile: Philip Deloria
In his new project, Deloria traces changes in the ideological formations surrounding Indian people in the late 19th and early 20th centuries, particularly those surrounding violence, primitivism and assimilation, and seeks to understand the ways that Native people operated within American cultural expectation. Examining the cultural politics of Wild West shows and Hollywood, professional sports, musical performance, and automobility and other technological adoptions, Deloria argues for a critical and productive Native engagement with modernity.
