The Canvas Project

A Series of Exhibits Sponsored by the Williams College Multicultural Center

When identity intersects with art, we are allowed glimpses into the realities lived by human beings. A brushstroke can capture a thousand years of history, a camera lens can tell the story of a community, and a dancer’s body can express the unspeakable. At the Multicultural Center, we recognize that the fantastic power of art and creativity can turn our walls into a canvas that will tell the stories of historically underrepresented communities: exposing their oppression, celebrating their cultures, and recognizing their fierce perseverance. Please join us as we launch The Canvas Project.

Our first exhibit is “The Missing Story of Ourselves: Poverty and the Promise of Higher Education”. The photographs and essays in this installation present a unique view of poverty from an insider’s perspective and reframe our cultural understandings of poor parents, families, work and higher education in the United States today.

“The Missing Story of Ourselves” is on display at Jenness House from Friday September 8th until the 23rd. Jenness is open Monday to Friday from 9am until 6pm and Saturdays from 10am until 3pm.

I paint my own reality. The only thing I know is that I paint because I need to, and I paint whatever passes through my head without any other consideration.
