Resources at Williams Williams College has a wealth of resources available to Classics students and faculty. Williams College Museum of Art The Williams College Museum of Art possesses a varied collection of classical artwork both on permanent display and in its rotating collection, all available for study and teaching. Roman Coin Collection The Classics Department has an extensive collection of Roman coins spanning the 4th century BCE through the Byzantine era. The collection is currently being catalogued and photographed with the goal of publishing an illustrated catalog on the Web. As of August 12, 2006, 340 coins have been photographed, the catalog is being converted to web-friendly form, and so we are moving ever closer to publishing the collection. You can see a brief slide show of selected coins that was prepared for a meeting of the Senior Majors' Colloquium in the spring of 2007. ∗There currently is no easy way to return to this page from the slide show, no link or button. You will need to use your browser's "History" menu. I hope to fix this soon. The Chapin Libary The Chapin Library is particularly proud of its holdings of Greek and Latin classics, among them fine productions of the Aldine press; the first printed editions of Aesop, Aristophanes, and Homer, inter alia; the first classical text printed in England (Aristotle, Ethica ad Nicomachum, Oxford, 1479); and the first classical text printed anywhere (Cicero, De Oratore, Subiaco, Italy, before 30 September 1465). Allied with these is a selection of Greek manuscript fragments on papyri from Oxyrhynchus, and fine 15th-century humanistic manuscripts of Ovid and Vergil. Unfortunately, because of the construction of the new Sawyer Library, the Chapin Library collections are now closed (as of January, 2008) and will re-open in 2011 when the new library has been completed. For additional information, go to the Chapin's web page about the move. The majority of the Chapin Library collection is catalogued in Francis. Sawyer Library Sawyer Library has an extensive collection of texts, scholarly works, and journals for the study of Classics, ancient history, philosophy, art, archaeology, political science, and more. The collection includes full runs of journals such as xx. Use this link to search Francis, the on-line catalogue of Sawyer Library. In addition to author, title and subject searches, try browsing by call number. The following LC call numbers mark the beginning of their sections: P1 (Greek and Roman language, linguistics, and journals); PA1 (Greek and Latin literature); DF1 (Greek history); DG1 (Roman history); B165 (Greek and Roman philosophy); JC51 (ancient political history and theory); HQ1127 (women in the ancient world); N5610 (Greek and Roman art, architecture and archaeology).
