The BIMO Program
sponsors colloquia and special events each year, including:
Class
of 1960 Scholars Program:
With funds generously provided by the Class of 1960, the BIMO Program
has been able to invite prominent researchers from other institutions
to campus to present a public seminar and then to meet privately in a
discussion and dinner setting with a select group of students (chosen
for the calendar year to be the BIMO Class of 1960 Scholars).
In Fall 2005 the BIMO Class of 1960 Scholars speaker was Dr. Garry Nolan (Stanford). His laboratory focuses on signaling in the immune system and study of host processes that HIV-1 exploits. Control of apoptosis, autoimmunity, angiogenesis, retrovirology, and blockade of HIV-1 infection are prominent in his studies.
In Spring 2004 the BIMO Class of 1960 Scholars speaker was
Dr.
Scott Emr (UC San Diego) who does research on membrane trafficking
using Saccharomyces cerevisiae as a model system. The title of his
April 16 seminar was "Membrane Trafficking in the Regulation
of Receptor Signaling and Viral Budding"
Previous speakers have included
Dr.
Marlene Belfort, Gerald
Fink, Virginia
Cornish, Chris
Walsh, Bruce
Stillman, Carol
Greider, Barbara
Sollner-Webb, Tamar
Enoch, Michael
Laskowski, Jr., Chris
Somerville, Hector
Flores, and Dennis Brown.
BIMO Alumni
Research Reunions:
Each spring a small group of Williams alumni currently in grad school
or in post-doctoral research positions in the areas of biochemistry,
cell biology, or molecular biology are invited back to campus. There
is a public poster session at which the alumni present their current
research and have the opportunity to have informal discussions with
current Williams students about careers in research, choosing a graduate
program, the value of doing research as an undergraduate, etc. etc
