The Dumbbell Nebula

The Dumbbell nebula, a planetary nebula, gets its name from the double-lobed shape of the innermost bright nebulosity (click for a shorter exposure), whichisoverexposed in this image. Of interest here is the filamentary halo, observed in the light of doubly-ionized oxygen. This image, obtained with the Burrell Schmidt telescope on Kitt Peak, covers 30 arcminutes on a side.
