About the Department

Welcome to the web page for the Department of Asian Studies at Williams College. This page describes the general outlines of the department and this site, including what can be found in each of the links in the navigation bar.

Majors and Courses. Williams students can take a wide range of courses related to Asia in several departments. For students who wish to combine language study with area courses, the Asian Studies department offers three majors: Chinese, Japanese, and Asian Studies. Students may also pursue a concentration in International Studies with a focus on East Asia.

Faculty. The department is composed of eight core faculty in Chinese and Japanese language and literature, as well as affiliated faculty in other departments who work in the areas of Asian anthropology, art, history, music, political science, religion, and sociology. Language Fellows. Our language fellows program brings apprentice teachers to Williams to assist in teaching the language classes.

Endowments and Grants. The department has several generous endowments that enable it to sponsor a range of activities, student prizes, and student grants for study abroad.

Library and Museum. The strong collections and services at the college library and museum support research and teaching related to Asia.

Diversity. Diversity resources related to Asian Studies at Williams include the Multicultural Center and related student groups.

The faculty in the department are members of the Center for Foreign Languages, Literatures, and Cultures or CFLLC, an umbrella for foreign language and culture faculty at Williams.
