Chinese Language and Literature
We regularly offer four levels of instruction in Modern Chinese (Mandarin), designed to enable students to become proficient in aural comprehension, speaking, reading, and writing, as well as an introductory course in Classical Chinese. Independent study (CHIN 497, 498) may be offered depending on student needs and available resources. Our Chinese language courses employ some of the most up-to-date and innovative teaching materials and methods available. Extensive use is made of audio and video materials, as well as of advanced technology such as digital video, satellite broadcasts, and computer materials. The relationship between language and culture, the sociolinguistically appropriate use of language, and differences between the standard spoken and standard written languages are stressed throughout.
We also also offer courses on both traditional and modern Chinese literature in translation for those students who wish to become acquainted with the major achievements in Chinese literary and intellectual history. Students are encouraged to take courses in Chinese area studies -- such as art, economics, history, political science, and religion -- that will complement their language courses. Students are also encouraged to spend one or both semesters of their junior year in study abroad in a Chinese-speaking country. Finally, they are cordially invited to join us for the weekly Chinese language table.
