The Visual Resources Center is developing its digital image database in CONTENTdm, based upon actual course content used in Williams art history courses, supplemented by content in ARTstor. Both databases can be used in concert with each other. Visual Resources Center staff is available for consultation in their use; please set up an appointment well in advance for your project.
ARTstor DATABASE
A Mellon Foundation initiative, ARTstor is a digital image library developed from various academic and museum collections, presently numbering 300,000 images. It includes a classroom presentation tool, the offline viewer, that has advanced side-by-side image functions, as well as list and print functions for study and cooperative group functionality. All Williams users may access it, but one must: REGISTER AND LOGON to use any functions other than browse and search. Review the menu of the home page, and note that under “Using ARTstor” is a manual. For access to the Faculty Quick Guide, click here. For access to the Student Quick Guide, click here. Once registered, you may also participate in a WebEx training session.
To run ARTstor, you must first install Java, if not already on your machine. On the Sun Microsystems web site: http://java.com/en/download/help/5000020100.xml click on "Java software download" in the upper right hand corner and then click on the yellow "Begin download" button to download the 5.0 version of the Java Runtime Environment.
Frequently check the ARTstor homepage under collections and news and notes. As collection development is foremost and ongoing, additions occur constantly. Many resources previously accessed directly are now in the ARTstor domain.
For information and assistance with any of the above tools, please contact the staff in the Visual Resources Center. Individual training sessions can be arranged.
