I've been constructing hybrid creatures, using myself (for
the most part) as the human character, since 1989. I started manipulating
my images on the computer, using Photoshop software in 1993. Since 2000, I've
been shooting exclusively with digital cameras.
For me, as I believe is true for most contemporary artists working in the
medium of photography, in this transitory stage between film and digital,
digital photography is simultaneously scary and exciting... ultimately
bittersweet. Digital media offers all sorts of manipulative options and new
output possibilities for the photographer, at the same time, stripping
the photographic image of the integrity which is the basis of all realist
approaches to the media. Even for fabricated photographers, like myself,
my imagery is highly dependent on photographic verisimilitude and the medium's
ability to persuade viewers to "suspend their disbelief."
